May 2012

Wow!  We can’t believe it’s May already.  And not a single update on our website all year long.  Shame on us!

To say it’s been busy would be an understatement.  There’s a lot of good news to share…so where to start?

Beth:  The University hired Beth full-time to run the chamber music program in the School of Music!  She went full-time (the Maia position was 80%) in January and has started planning residencies for established string quartets to visit Iowa next year to perform and to coach chamber music with University students.  In addition to planning next year’s offerings, she has been co-teaching a course at the University on “Re-imagining Performance” with a faculty member from the School of Art & Art History.

Eugene:  The University is moving forward with the design of a new School of Music and a new Art Building to replace the flood-damaged buildings from 2008.  Eugene’s workload now includes about $250 million worth of projects to manage on behalf of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.  As a result of the increased workload, Eugene received a promotion at work and spends a lot of time thinking about new buildings!

Emily:  Emily decided to stop swimming earlier this year and went back to Girls on the Run, which is an after-school program that focuses on teaching girls healthy living and self-respect through running.  She did it last year and the program culminates in a 5k run at the end of the year.  Last year, she ran the race with Beth; this year, Eugene will be running at her side.  In the practice 5k run they did last month, Emily shaved off 10 minutes from last year’s time.

Ethan:  Ethan is loving playing baseball with a 9-and-under team associated with the local high school.  They practiced indoors starting in January and recently started playing games.  The team is looking good and Ethan is having a ball!  He pitched in his first game last month where he worked one inning and struck out the side in order!  Dad was pretty impressed!

Family:  The big news (and one of the formidable reasons for not keeping the website up to date) has been that we’re moving!  We put the relocation drive into high gear in January and started looking for a larger house and got our house ready for the market.  We wanted to take advantage of the low mortgage rates to get a little bigger house.  Everything came together in March and April.  We sold our house within 10 days of putting it on the market and quickly purchased a house within a few weeks of that.  Everything comes to a close this month as we close on our new house on May 18 and close on our current house on May 24.  We looked at a number of houses, and this was the only house that the kids walked into and said they loved!

We’ll try to get some pictures up in the next month or so.  This month will be pretty busy packing, moving, and settling in.  As always, please come and visit us.
